How It Works
Carpet padding (cushion) goes under the carpet to provide comfort, insulation, and extend carpet life. It comes in rolls, typically 6 ft x 45 ft.
The Formula
Sq Yards = (Room Sq Ft / 9) x 1.10 waste
Variables
- Thickness — 3/8" for berber/low-pile, 7/16" standard, 1/2" for plush
- Density — 6 lb minimum for residential, 8 lb for heavy traffic
Example
180 sq ft room = 20 sq yd + 10% waste = 22 sq yd of padding. At $4/sq yd = $88.
Tips
- Most carpet warranties require specific pad thickness and density — check before buying.
- Never exceed 7/16" thickness for berber or loop carpet — it causes buckling.
- Memory foam pad is comfortable but too soft for heavy traffic areas.
- Moisture barrier pad is recommended for basements and concrete subfloors.
