How It Works
Carpet tiles (also called carpet squares) are modular, typically 24"x24". They are self-adhesive or use carpet tile adhesive. Individual damaged tiles can be replaced.
The Formula
Tiles = CEIL(Length/Tile Size) x CEIL(Width/Tile Size) + Waste + Spares
Variables
- Grid — Round up each dimension to the next full tile
- Waste — 5% for monolithic/quarter-turn, 10% for ashlar
- Spares — 5% reserve for future replacement
Example
20x15 room with 24" tiles: 10 x 8 = 80 tiles + 5% waste + 5% spares = 88 tiles.
Tips
- Buy 5% extra and store in a closet for future spot replacement.
- Quarter-turn pattern hides seams better than monolithic.
- Use carpet tile adhesive (not glue) — it remains tacky and allows removal.
- Start from the center of the room for balanced border tiles.
