How It Works

Demolition cost depends heavily on the existing floor type. Carpet is the cheapest and fastest to remove. Tile on concrete is the hardest and most expensive.

The Formula

Demo Cost = Area x Labor Rate + Haul-Away

Variables

  • Labor Rate — $0.75/sqft carpet to $4/sqft tile removal
  • Haul-Away — $150 small load, $350 for heavy debris (tile, stone)

Example

200 sq ft tile removal: $800 labor + $350 hauling = $1,150 total.

Tips

  • DIY carpet removal saves $150-$300 and only takes a few hours.
  • Tile removal creates enormous dust — seal the room with plastic sheeting.
  • Check for asbestos in vinyl tiles installed before 1980 — test before removing.
  • Renting a dumpster ($300-$400) is cheaper than multiple haul-away loads.
  • Floating floors (laminate, LVP) are the easiest to remove — just unclick and stack.
