How It Works

Laminate flooring comes in boxes with a specific square footage coverage printed on the label. Always round up to whole boxes.

The Formula

Boxes = CEIL((Room Area x (1 + Waste%)) / Box Coverage)

Variables

  • Room Area — Length x Width of the room
  • Box Coverage — Sq ft per box (check the label — typically 20-25 sq ft)
  • Waste% — 10% for straight, 15% for diagonal runs

Example

14x11 room = 154 sq ft + 10% waste = 169.4 sq ft. At 23.91 sq ft/box = 8 boxes.

Tips

  • Check the exact sq ft per box on your specific product — it varies widely.
  • Buy one extra box as a spare — laminate patterns get discontinued.
  • Laminate needs underlayment (sold separately unless pre-attached).
  • Floating laminate needs 1/4" to 3/8" expansion gaps at walls.
  • Do not install in bathrooms unless rated waterproof (not just water-resistant).
