How It Works
Measure complex rooms by breaking them into rectangular sections. Add all sections together, then subtract any areas that do not get flooring (closets, islands).
The Formula
Net Area = (Section 1 + Section 2 + Section 3) - Subtracted Areas
Variables
- Section — Each rectangular section: Length x Width
- Subtract — Areas that do not get flooring (built-ins, islands)
Example
L-shaped room: Section 1 = 15x12 (180 sqft) + Section 2 = 8x6 (48 sqft) = 228 sq ft total.
Tips
- Measure at floor level, not at the ceiling — walls are not always plumb.
- Break L-shapes into two rectangles; T-shapes into three.
- For round or angled areas, multiply length x width and multiply by 0.8 as an approximation.
- Always double-check measurements — measure twice, cut once applies to ordering too.
