How It Works

Stair treads are the horizontal surface you step on, risers are the vertical face, and nosing is the rounded edge that overhangs the riser.

The Formula

Treads = Number of Steps | Risers = Steps + 1 (closed) or 0 (open)

Variables

  • Tread — Horizontal step surface (typically 10-11" deep)
  • Riser — Vertical face between treads (typically 7-8" high)
  • Nosing — Rounded front edge piece, sold in linear feet

Example

13 steps, 36" wide staircase: 13 treads + 14 risers + 39 linear ft of nosing.

Tips

  • Building code requires risers between 7" and 7-3/4" with max 3/8" variance between steps.
  • Stair treads should match your floor exactly — order from the same manufacturer.
  • Pre-finished treads save time but custom-stained gives better color matching.
  • Use tread jigs for consistent nosing overhang on each step.
