How It Works

Calculating tile quantity requires knowing your room area and tile size. Always add a waste factor for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.

The Formula

Tiles = (Room Area / Tile Area) x (1 + Waste%)

Variables

  • Room Area — Room length x width in square feet
  • Tile Area — Single tile coverage in square feet
  • Waste% — Extra percentage for cuts and breakage (typically 10-15%)

Example

A 12x10 room (120 sq ft) with 12"x12" tiles and 10% waste: 120 tiles + 12 waste = 132 tiles total.

Tips

  • Always buy 10-15% extra tiles for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.
  • Diagonal or herringbone patterns need 15% waste factor.
  • Keep leftover tiles for future repairs — matching discontinued tiles is difficult.
  • Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines but more waste from cuts.
