How It Works
Tile waste comes from three sources: pattern cuts, room shape complexity, and installer skill level. Always add a repair reserve too.
The Formula
Total Waste % = Pattern Waste + Shape Waste + Experience Waste + 2% Repair Reserve
Variables
- Pattern Waste — 5% straight, 8% offset, 12% diagonal, 15% herringbone
- Shape Waste — 2% rectangle, 5% L-shape, 8% irregular
- Experience — 2% professional, 5% DIY, 8% beginner
Example
DIY herringbone in an L-shaped room: 15% + 5% + 5% + 2% = 27% waste. On 120 tiles = 33 extra = 153 total.
Tips
- A professional installer wastes 5-7% on average; a first-timer wastes 12-20%.
- Keep 2-3% of tiles as repair spares — matching tiles years later is often impossible.
- Rent a wet saw instead of using a snap cutter to reduce breakage waste.
- Complex cuts around toilets and doorframes generate the most waste.
