How It Works
Transition strips bridge the gap between two flooring types. T-molding joins same-height floors, reducers join different heights, and thresholds finish at doorways.
The Formula
Strips = CEIL(Total Linear Inches / Strip Length)
Variables
- T-Molding — For same-height floors (e.g., laminate to laminate)
- Reducer — For different heights (e.g., hardwood to tile)
- Threshold — For doorway edges or floor-to-carpet transitions
Example
3 transitions at 36" each = 108" total. With 36" strips, need 3 strips.
Tips
- Match the transition strip to your flooring color — most manufacturers sell matching strips.
- T-molding requires a channel/track screwed to the subfloor.
- Reducers hide height differences of up to 3/8".
- Use a threshold at exterior doors for weather sealing.
