How It Works
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is a waterproof floating floor that clicks together. It comes in boxes with a specific sq ft coverage printed on the label.
The Formula
Boxes = CEIL((Room Area x (1 + Waste%)) / Box Coverage)
Variables
- Room Area — Length x Width in sq ft
- Box Coverage — Sq ft per box (check label, typically 20-27 sq ft)
Example
14x12 room = 168 sq ft + 10% waste = 184.8 sq ft. At 23.64 sq ft/box = 8 boxes.
Tips
- LVP with attached pad saves a step — otherwise buy underlayment separately.
- Look for 20 mil or thicker wear layer for residential use (28+ mil for commercial).
- LVP can go over existing floors — even tile — as long as it is flat.
- Acclimate planks in the room for 48 hours before installation.
- Waterproof does not mean the subfloor is protected — water can seep through seams.
