How It Works
Waste percentage depends on room complexity, installation direction, and board lengths. Simple rooms with parallel installation waste the least.
The Formula
Total Waste % = Base 3% + Layout + Direction + Board Length factors
Variables
- Base — 3% minimum for end-cut waste and defective boards
- Layout — 5% rectangle, 8% L-shape, 10% hallway, 12% complex
- Direction — 0% parallel, 2% perpendicular, 5% diagonal
Example
Diagonal install in an L-shaped room: 3% base + 8% layout + 5% diagonal + 2% random length = 18%.
Tips
- Hallways waste more because short boards create many end cuts.
- Diagonal installation looks great but wastes 5% more material.
- Random-length boards are standard and waste less than uniform lengths.
- Open the first 3-4 boxes before starting to check for quality and mix shading.
